Maiden win for Mortara and Volkswagen in Formula 3 Euro Series
01.06.2008 - In the streets of Pau, Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) came out on top in the sixth season round of the Formula 3 Euro Series. Thus, he secured the maiden victory for his engine manufacturer, Volkswagen, upon its 14th start in the world’s strongest junior race series. The Italian was followed home by Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam) and Dani Clos (Prema Powerteam).
With his maiden win, Mortara extended his lead in the points’ standings of the Formula 3 Euro Series to 14 points. Finn, Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport) is still runner-up, although he failed to score any points, finishing 15th at the 2,76 kilometres long circuit in Pau.
Because of the rain, the race started behind the safety car with Van der Zande in the lead. Mortara, who had started seventh, showed an impressive recovery, after which he took the lead on lap 14. From that point on, he controlled the race and the biggest achievement for the Italian, who is based in Geneva, was never in jeopardy.
Behind Mortara, Renger van der Zande, Dani Clos and Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport) were battling for the remaining podium positions. For 19-year old Spaniard, Clos, who only went past Vietoris on the penultimate lap, it was his first podium finish in the Formula 3 Euro Series.
Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus): “Scoring the maiden victory for Volkswagen is an incredible feeling. We were very competitive throughout the weekend. This victory is a reward well deserved.”
Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam): “After a poor start into the weekend, it ended well with second place today. As I only had qualified 24th, I already thought that the weekend would be gone. However, in yesterday’s chaos race, I made it up into eighth place, which brought me pole position for today’s race. There was no way to hold Mortara, therefore I am happy with second place.”
Dani Clos (Prema Powerteam): “My first-ever podium in the Formula 3 Euro Series is fantastic. So far, I didn’t have luck on my side. Today, it finally worked out.”
