NOVEMBER 22, 2006 A possible explanation for Hakkinen rumours

The rumours that Mika Hakkinen might make a comeback with McLaren are rather odd. It is hard to believe that McLaren would go down that route when the team has a hotshoe like Lewis Hamilton, who would be signed up within minutes if he was on the open market. And the other car belongs to Fernando Alonso, so there is no chance of Mika taking that one.


So what is going on?


The team has an experienced test driver in Pedro de la Rosa but there is always a chance that McLaren might turn to Hakkinen to ask him to try out the cars and see how they can be developed. Alexander Wurz was an established testing expert with an engineering background and so his move to Williams was definitely a loss to the team. Perhaps Hakkinen might be called in to do occasional tests to sort out problems - and at the same time keep the regular drivers on their toes.


It may not even be as complicated as that. Ron Dennis and Mika Hakkinen have enjoyed a very close relationship for more than 10 years and it may be that Mika just wants to try a Formula 1 car one more time and Ron is happy to do it for old time's sake.

El autor del artículo especula acerca del motivo de los rumores sobre Mika Häkkinen y McLaren. Ante todo, descarta que Mika vaya a volver, teniendo McLaren a Alonso (intocable su puesto) y a Hamilton (del cual dice que si quedase libre sería fichado de inmediato por otra escudería).

Así que apunta dos posibilidades:

1.- Que pese a contar con De la Rosa como "experimentado piloto probador", la marcha de Alex Wurz ha sido una pérdida para el equipo, dados sus conocimientos de ingeniería, así que McLaren querría contar con la opinión de Häkkinen para ver los puntos débiles del coche (esta especulación no deja en buen lugar a De la Rosa. Añado yo que "se dice" que un coche sólo mejora cuando lo pilota alguien capaz de llevarlo más allá del límite aceptado por otro piloto de inferior calidad, el cual piensa que va al límite... pero se trata de "su" límite. En "F1 Racing" comentan que el BMW comenzó a mejorar más rápidamente cuando Kubica lo cogió y puso en aprietos a Heidfeld...).

2.- Que simplemente Mika quiera darse unas vueltas con un F1, una vez más, y como él y Ron Dennis son amiguetes, éste haya accedido.

Me quedo con la primera opción, estoy seguro de que la marcha de Wurz les ha perjudicado bastante, y contar con la ayuda de Hakkinen sería de mucha ayuda.

En cuanto a los comentarios que has dicho sobre F1 Racing, completamente de acuerdo. Siempre habrá alguien que establezca un límite un poco más alto.

Es decir, un poco más de dinero para los Williams-Toyota de Nico Rosberg y Alex Wurz.

NOVEMBER 23, 2006 Philips ups its support for Williams

The Dutch multinational Philips has announced an agreement to increase it sponsorship for the Williams team in 2007. The company had a trial year in 2006 and enjoyed a 15% increase in its sales of shaving equipment.


Philips will increase its use of logo and team imagery, and endorsement rights via both team drivers, Nico Rosberg and Alex Wurz.


The sponsorship is a sign of F1's value in the sponsorship markets, Philips having decided to switch to F1 after spending a great deal on the 2006 soccer World Cup.

Lewis Hamilton has been confirmed as the second McLaren driver in 2007. The 21-year-old Briton, who won this year's GP2 champion, becomes has had his career nurtured by McLaren boss Ron Dennis since the age of 13.
"To be racing in Formula 1 with McLaren has been the ultimate goal for me since I was very young," Hamilton said. "This opportunity is a fantastic way to end what has been the best year for me. I have grown up with McLaren and Mercedes and wouldn't be where I am today without their continued support and guidance. I'm aware that this will be a challenge and I know that there will be a lot of attention on me. However the team has told me just to relax, do the best I can and enjoy the opportunity. I will work hard to get good results."


The announcement means that Pedro de la Rosa will become the team's full-time test driver once again. This year he raced a number of times after Juan Pablo Montoya left the team.


"Pedro has done an outstanding job for us this season but we felt it was the right time to provide Lewis with this opportunity," said Ron Dennis. "It's obviously going to be the biggest challenge of Lewis's career so far but it's one that we are sure he will be able to meet. He is coming into the paddock for the first time as a Formula One racing driver and will have to familiarise himself with the pressures of a Grand Prix weekend. However, the confidence we have in Lewis's abilities and talent is clear from our decision to give him the chance."

¡Pobre Fisichella! ¿Quién le iba a decir que la presión le llegaría tan pronto, y por donde menos lo esperaba?

Nelson Piquet Sr. afirma que su hijo ha sido tan rápido en su primer test como Kovalainen, de modo que apunta al asiento titular de Renault ya para la próxima temporada, 2007, si Giancarlo no demuestra ser más rápido que el propio finlandés.

Respecto a las posibilidades de Renault de retener el título tras la marcha de Alonso, Piquet Sr. comentó que no va a ser suficiente con tener un buen piloto en un buen coche, sino que necesitarán dos pilotos ultra-rápidos, de ahí el comentario sobre su hijo.

Triple world champion of the 1980s, Nelson Piquet, has warned Giancarlo Fisichella that his place in the Renault team could be called into question next year.

The 54-year-old Brazilian, whose namesake and son will be Renault's official third and reserve driver in 2007, told Italian press that team chiefs are likely to keep a close eye on Fisichella as the F1 veteran shapes up alongside Heikki Kovalainen.

"Nelsinho is going to have an apprenticeship year," Piquet Senior told the sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport, "but in his first test he was already quicker than Kovalainen. This is really the issue. If Kovalainen is faster than Fisichella, then the possibility of Nelsinho racing for Renault is much bigger -- even for 2007, even during next season.
"

Piquet - who won drivers' titles in 1981, 1983, and 1987 - insisted that Renault's chances of retaining the championship in 2007 without Fernando Alonso at the wheel depends on having two ultra-quick race drivers.

21-year-old Nelson Piquet Junior's father continued : "It will not be good enough to have just one good driver or one good car."

Ferrari has been in command at the Barcelona test in recent days with Felipe Massa fastest on the first two days of running and test driver Luca Badoer setting the fastest time on the third day - and overall. With only Toyota running on Friday there is no great likelihood that Badoer's time will be beaten. His best lap was a 1m16.317s, beating the previous day's best of 1m16.403s, set by Massa. Felipe did not run on the final day when second test driver Marc Gene took over and set the seventh fastest time overall with a 1m17.340s.


Badoer's best lap was three-tenths of a second faster than the best achieved by Renault's Heikki Kovalainen, who stopped the clocks at 1m16.609s, the third best lap of the test. Renault's new test driver Nelson Piquet Jr was ninth quickest after three days running with a 1m17.428s.


The only other man to break into the 1m16s was BMW's Robert Kubica who recorded a 1m16.729s on the third day of the test. Nick Heidfeld did the first two days and set a best of 1m17.159s, which was the fifth fastest time of the test, before handing the car over to Timo Glock who did a good job on his first day with the team to record a 1m17.632s, which was good enough for ninth overall. He will only get better.


The same can be said for McLaren's Lewis Hamilton who was much in the spotlight with three days of running and a best of 1m17.077s. This was the fourth fastest time overall and was ahead of Pedro de la Rosa, who did just the first two days, setting a best of 1m17.546s on the opening day, which ended up as the 10th fastest time overall.


Mika Hakkinen got a lot of coverage but his best time after a day of running was 1m19.336s, which was well off the pace. Given that it is five years since the Finn tested an F1 car this is not bad but he needed to get a lot closer to the pace if his tyre testing experience is going to be helpful to the team.


Honda Racing F1 ran without Jenson Button, which left Rubens Barrichello as the quickest Honda man with a 1m17.190s on the last day (which was the sixth best overall time of the test). The team also ran new test driver Christian Klien on two of the three days and he ended up with a best of 1m17.774s, which was 12th quickest. James Rossiter was also in action on the first day and recorded a 1m18.526s.


Toyota's best effort was Ralf Schumacher's 1m17.359s on the last day - Ralf's first. The team also ran Olivier Panis, who did the second day and recorded a 1m17.643a (good for 11th overall), Jarno Trulli, who set a best lap of 1m18.109s on the third day - the 13th fastest lap overall - although this was slower than David Coulthard's best for Red Bull Racing. Toyota also ran Kamui Kobayashi who recorded a best of 1m20.731s on his first day.
Coulthard's 1m17.876s was the best lap achieved by Red Bull Racing, while new signing Mark Webber played himself in with a 1m18.249s on the second day of testing. Michael Ammmermuller ran on the third day and set a best of 1m18.741s.


Thirteenth overall was Anthony Davidson in the Super Aguri Honda (actually a recent Honda chassis), who recorded a best of 1m18.045s.


Next up was Narain Karthikeyan in his Williams with a 1m18.087s on the third day which was clear of Alexander Wurz's best time on the first day of 1m18.691s.


Scuderia Toro Rosso was also in action with Scott Speed setting a best of 1m18.528s and Tonio Liuzzi recording a 1m18.798s.


When all is said and done, however, the times mean little as the cars are all the same as this year's models and the work is currently centred on tyres as the Michelin teams get used to Bridgestones.
