First season win: Nico Hülkenberg cheers in Mugello

Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix) celebrated his first victory of the Formula 3 Euroseries season in Mugello (Italy). The 20-year old achieved a superioir start-finish-win.

The German was joined on the podium by Japanese Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport) and rookie driver Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) from France.
Hülkenberg laid the foundation for his victory at the start when he made the best out of his pole position and led the field into the first corner. During the 21 lap race, he had to turn down one attack by his rival Tsukakoshi, during which the two opponents slightly tangled. After that, Hülkenberg safely drove victory home with 21-year old Honda protégé Tsukakoshi second across the line.
After the race a happy Nico Hülkenberg said: “Today, it wasn’t an easy win. Tsukakoshi kept me under pressure all the time so that I didn’t have any chance to relax even once. In this race, I had to remain focussed one hundred percent in order not to make any mistakes. After the problems I had in the season opener at Hockenheim, today’s victory is a great result.”

Novedades aerodinámicas en el Paul Ricard
Williams no tiene previsto dejar de utilizar los motores Toyota en un futuro próximo.

La escudería británica comenzó a usar los propulsores del fabricante japonés la pasada temporada y ahora colabora con Toyota en diferentes aspectos, como el diseño de la caja de cambios y el asesoramiento en diferentes asuntos políticos dentro de la Fórmula Uno.

Incluso a pesar de que la relación que se mantiene con Toyota no sea la misma que Williams estableció en su día con Honda, Renault o BMW, el copropietario del equipo, Sir Frank Williams, dice estar satisfecho de la actual situación.

"En Toyota se preocupan por nosotros y nos tratan muy bien," explicaba Williams en declaraciones a la revista suiza Motorsport Aktuell.

"No sentimos ningún tipo de inseguridad. Son gente muy buena. Estamos contentos con ellos y esperamos que nuestra relación con Toyota sea larga," añadía Williams.

Sin embargo, en el Gran Premio de Turquía del pasado fin de semana, Sir Frank Williams reconocía las dificultades que supone la Fórmula Uno actual para un equipo privado y comentaba que le parece poco probable que alguien vaya a ocupar pronto el box que ha dejado vacante Super Aguri.

"Si un privado tiene la intención de entrar, se encontrará con que el aspecto económico ahora mismo es muy complicado, y por mucho que leas el Wall Street Journal y el Financial Times, se necesita dinero y capital," explicaba Williams.

Los entrenamientos de esta semana en el Paul Ricard han finalizado hoy tras dos días en los que los diez equipos de la parrilla han estado preparando el próximo GP de Mónaco, y otro, el de hoy, rodando en la configuración '1EV2 SC' del trazado galo de cara al GP de Canadá del próximo mes de junio. Sin embargo, la lluvia ha afectado a esta última jornada de pruebas y por tanto los tiempos no son representativos.

Jarno Trulli ha sido el más rápido al volante de su Toyota con un tiempo de 1:31.360s en la 12ª de las 26 vueltas que ha completado. El piloto de Renault Nelson Piquet ha acumulado un total de 60 giros, más que ningún otro, y ha concluido en segunda posición a tres décimas de segundo del Toyota.

Pedro de la Rosa ha sido hoy el encargado de rodar al volante del McLaren Mercedes y ha obtenido el tercer mejor registro del día, seguido por el Toro Rosso STR3 de Sebastian Vettel. El vencedor del GP de Turquía, Felipe Massa, ha completado un limitado programa de pruebas y ha terminado quinto por delante del BMW Sauber de Nick Heidfeld.

Uno de los protegidos de Red Bull, Sebastien Buemi, ha probado hoy a los mandos del RB4 y ha concluido séptimo, seguido por el Force India Ferrari de Giancarlo Fisichella, el Honda de Jenson Button y Adrian Sutil. Nico Hulkenberg ha cerrado los tiempos con el Williams Toyota en un día en el que la escudería de Grove ha decidido darle la oportunidad de acumular kilómetros con un F1 al joven piloto alemán.

Tras concluir los test de esta semana en el Paul Ricard, la próxima cita para los equipos del Mundial será el GP de Mónaco, que arrancará el próximo jueves con la primera jornada de entrenamientos libres.

Hulkenberg fue el más lento de los 11 pilotos en pista

La tercera y última jornada de entrenamientos de esta semana en el Paul Ricard se veía ayer afectada por la lluvia, que comenzó a caer con fuerza sobre el circuito francés hacia mediodía y que limitó el kilometraje de los equipos.

La jornada fue ciertamente frustrante para el joven piloto probador de Williams Toyota, Nico Hulkenberg, que sólo pudo completar 35 vueltas sobre la configuración larga del trazado galo, que debía permitir a los equipos preparar el próximo Gran Premio de Montreal.

A la conclusión del test, el Director Técnico de Williams, Sam Michael, comentaba que "hoy hemos finalizado nuestros entrenamientos en el Paul Ricard sobre una pista muy mojada que apenas nos ha permitido rodar por la tarde. Pero aún así, la semana ha sido productiva y nos ha permitido probar diferentes componentes para Mónaco."

Paul Ricard Test Summary

16 May 08

Today's final day of testing at the Ricard circuit was interupted by poor weather that saw up to 12mm of standing rain on the track surface, causing extended periods of circuit closure in the afternoon.
It was a frustrating day for young tester Nico Hulkenberg who managed to complete just 35 laps, albeit the circuit had been re-configured into its 5.255km layout to allow the teams to prepare for the Montreal Grand Prix.
At the conclusion of the test, team Technical Director Sam Michael said, "We concluded testing at Ricard today, on a very wet track that was closed for the majority of the afternoon. Even so, we managed to get through some background test items and sign off components for running at Monaco."

F3 Euroseries return to Pau this weekend

Following a two-year break, the Formula 3 Euro Series is going to again race on Pau's street circuit, this weekend. In the support programme of the World Touring Car Championship, the 30 young drivers will contest the fifth and sixth rounds of the season on the 2.76-kilometre racetrack located in Southern France. Finland's rookie Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport) travels to Pau as championship leader, with his Italian chaser, Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus), being tied with the Finn, prior to the French race weekend.

20-year old Mäki succeeded in winning two of the four rounds contested to date but in one of the other two, he was forced into early retirement. While Mortara scored consistently: Three times, the 21-year old finished third and once he came fourth, thus being the only driver who scored in every round of the season. While Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix) has compensated for his poor season kick-off: in both Hockenheim rounds, technical problems made an early end to his hopes for a good result but at Mugello, he delivered in fine style and won one of the races to leap up to third position in the championship.

In Pau, Canada's Robert Wickens (Signature-Plus) is going to make his Formula 3 Euro Series debut. The 19-year old from Toronto replaces Monegasque Stefano Coletti with immediate effect.

For the French Formula 3 Euro Series drivers, Pau represents the home event. With Franck Mailleux, Jean Karl Vernay (both Signature-Plus), Yan Clairay, Tom Dillmann (both SG Formula), Richard Philippe (Carlin Motorsport) and Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) as well as the teams ART Grand Prix, Signature-Plus and SG Formula, six drivers and three teams with French roots are going to contest the races held on the tight street circuit located at the foot of the Pyrenees.

Franck Mailleux (Signature-Plus): "The circuit on the streets of Pau is a truly special one. It's rather fast and completing a perfect lap is anything but easy. Compared to other street circuits such as the Norisring, the walls in Pau are extremely close to the track. It's my goal to score as many points as possible. Therefore, I aim at securing a podium finish in the first race.

Vietoris in front in both free practice sessions at Pau

30.05.2008 - Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport, 1st free practice: 1:14.13 min / 2nd free practice: 1:12.354 min) apparently seems to do particularly well at the difficult track of Pau in the south of France. The German came out on top of the 30 cars strong field in both 30 minutes’ free practice sessions of the Formula 3 Euro Series. Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus, 1:14.162 min / 1:12.850 min) came second in both sessions. In the morning, third place was occupied by Jean-Karl Vernay (Signature-Plus, 1:14.333 min / 1:13.034 min), in the afternoon, it was Nico Hülkenberg who came third (ART Grand Prix, 1:14.867 min / 1:12.940 min).

In Pau, the free practice session of the Formula 3 Euro Series, normally running over one hour, was split into two sessions of 30 minutes each, both taking place on Friday. In the morning, Christian Vietoris came out on top. His fastest time was only challenged in the closing stages as first Jean-Karl Vernay and then Edoardo Mortara moved up into second place. Mortara’s fastest time was only 0.032 seconds slower than Vietoris’s outright fastest lap time. Thus, the two Signature drivers outpaced rookies Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 1:14.338 min / 1:12.971 min) and Martin Plowman (R.C. Motorsport, 1:14.391 min / 1:13.124 min), who ended up fourth and fifth.

After the second free practice, in which the lap times were faster than in the first session, Christian Vietoris was again on top. Only towards the end, Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport, 1:15.226 min / 1:12.996 min) also came to the fore. The Finn, who arrived in the south of France as the points’ leader in the Formula 3 Euro Series, ended up sixth ahead of Jean-Karl Vernay. The Frenchman was in first place for a long time until Vietoris outpaced him with only five minutes remaining.

With 15th place in both sessions, Robert Wickens (Signature-Plus, 1:14.910 min / 1:13.357 min) made a strong debut in the Formula 3 Euro Series. In Pau, the Canadian is making his debut in the world’s strongest single-seater category. Another driver contesting his maiden Euro Series’ weekend is Chinese, Cheng Cong Fu (R.C. Motorsport, 1:15.411 min / 1:15.499 min). He had missed out on the first two meetings of the Formula 3 Euro Series because he was representing his country in the A1GP series.

Bueno veremos que tal la carrera Nico ocupa la cuarta posicion en un dia complicadillo en el que los entrenos se partieron como en otras ocasiones por la gran parrilla de este año con el fin de evitar incidentes en el trazado urbano de pau, pasaba de ser de 30min conjuntos a 15min para cada grupo A y B en los primeros minutos estaba lloviendo y aunque hacia el final de sesion paraba de llover la pista mejoraba a medida que pasaban las vueltas Nico quedaba a dos decimas de Mortara que era quien ocupaba la primera posicion de su grupo seguido de Hulkenberg que fue segundo y un tercer puesto para Vietoris, quien no tuvo una buena actuacion sin duda fue Dani closs que quedo decimo tercero de su grupo a mas de 3 segundos de diferencia cabe destacar la gran actuacion de Daniel campos hull que quedo septimo a poco mas de un segundo y medio.....
La segunda parte de la calificacion con la pista secandose fue mas propicia para rodar algo mas fuerte pero sin embargo los tiempos tampoco fueron excelentes excepto para el poleman de ART el local James Jakes y para Makki que fueron los unicos que superaron el tiempo de Mortara asi tambien cabe destacar la poca luz con la que brillo el frances Jules Bianchi quedando finalmente octavo de su grupo y a dos segundos de su compañero James.

***Parece ser que Mortara esta siendo investigado por los comisarios al haber conseguido este el mejor tiempo en banderas amarillas veremos que pasa al final.

James Jakes claims pole position at Pau

31.05.2008 - Pole position for the fifth season round of the Formula 3 Euro Series at the 2.76 kilometres long and challenging street circuit of Pau in the south of France has been taken by James Jakes (ART Grand Prix, 1:26.189 min). For today’s race (start at 14.05 h), the Briton will be joined on the front row of the grid by Italian, Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus, 1:26.924 min). Points’ leader, Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport, 1:26.618 min) and Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix, 1:27,172 min) are on the second row.

Because of the narrow track and the huge entry of 30 cars, qualifying took place in two groups for odd and even starting numbers respectively. The driver with the outright fastest lap time will be starting from pole position while the further drivers from his group will be lining up behind him on the pole position side. The fastest driver of the other group will be starting second with the other drivers from his group behind him.

The drivers with odd starting numbers were the first to go out on the track and they had the more damp conditions. Only in the final seconds, Mortara succeeded in beating Hülkenberg. Also towards the end, Richard Philippe (Carlin Motorsport, 1:28.314 min) moved up into fourth behind Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport, 1:28.042 min).

Fastest driver in the second group was James Jakes from Mika Mäki. The two French drivers, Franck Mailleux (Signature-Plus, 1:27.233 min) and Yann Clairay (SG Formula, 1:27.461 min) also got themselves into a good position in third and fourth place respectively. With four minutes remaining, qualifying was briefly interrupted following an accident of Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 1:28.219 min).

James Jakes (ART Grand Prix): “In the last couple of weeks, we have been working very hard to improve. On my final lap, I put my head down and didn’t make any mistakes, as I wanted to have pole no matter what. Fortunately, it worked out.“

Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus): “Although conditions were difficult, qualifying was good for me. Being fastest in my group is good for me and for my team.”

Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport): “Qualifying was very difficult as the track firstly was wet, then dried out and rain set in again at the end. After the red flag, I only had one fast lap and that had to be right, as otherwise I would have started from the back. Fortunately, it went as planned.“

James Jakes wins action-packed race at Pau

31.05.2008 - At Pau, British driver, James Jakes (ART Grand Prix) secured himself his first season win in the Formula 3 Euro Series. At the 2.76 kilometres long and very narrow street circuits beneath the Pyrenees, he took the chequered flag just ahead of Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) and Jon Lancaster (ART Grand Prix). The race was marked by numerous accidents and two safety car interventions. Only ten out of the 30 young drivers made it to the finish. After five rounds, Edoardo Mortara is on top in the points’ standings of the Formula 3 Euro Series, eight points clear of Finn Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport). Thus, a driver with a Volkswagen engine is the points’ leader for the first time in history of the Formula 3 Euro Series.

At a drying track, Jakes led all the way from lights to flag in difficult conditions. It was the second time in his career after Magny Cours in 2007 that the Brit took the winner’s trophy after a round of the Formula 3 Euro Series. Behind the man from Leeds, there were plenty of retirements, as the street circuit at parts provided little grip, many drivers losing control of their car. One of the drivers affected was Mika Mäki, who had been in the lead of the points’ standings prior to the race. After the start, the Finn was second, but he already retired following a driver’s error on lap three. Third-placed Nico Hülkenberg also retired early after hitting the barrier on lap eleven.

James Jakes (ART Grand Prix): “It was a difficult race as conditions were anything but ideal. I am really happy with my first win of the season, especially as the start of my season wasn’t too good.”

Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus): “So far, the weekend here at Pau has been quite good for me. After qualifying, I knew that I would be able to get a good result. On the third lap, I slightly clipped the wall. After that, I focussed on staying on the track and make it home safely.”

Jon Lancaster (ART Grand Prix): It was an exciting race. I hadn’t expected being on the podium already after only my fifth race in the Formula 3 Euro Series, and from twelfth on the grid at that. I am happy.”

Pau, gara 1: Jakes è primo, Mortara guida sempre la classifica

Trenta i partenti, dieci i piloti al traguardo. La prima gara di Pau, disputata ha visto una incredibile serie di incidenti e due ingressi della safety-car. La traiettoria era asciutta e i piloti hanno utilizzato gomme slick, ma appena fuori dalla linea, l'asfalto umido rendeva inguidabili le vetture. James Jakes, partito dalla pole con la Dallara-Mercedes del team ART, ha vinto davanti a Edoardo Mortara, che mantiene la testa del campionato con la Dallara-Volkswagen del team Signature. Con pista asciutta, Jakes ha preso il comando ed è andato a vincere inseguito da Mortara.

Inizialmente però, secondo era Mika Maki, ma ha sbattuto al terzo giro. Contro il rail anche Nico Hulkenberg, che ha così perso la terza posizione. Sul terzo gradino del podio è allora salito Jon Lancaster, che non ha mancato di colpire il rail, ma ha potuto proseguire. Il giovane inglese della ART ha effettuato un buon recupero dal centro griglia. Notevole la rimonta di Dani Clos, sesto dopo essere partito dalla decima fila con la monoposto della Prema. Il team di Angelo Rosin vedrà partire dalla pole, in gara 2, la Dallara di Renger Van der Zande, ottavo. Tutti KO invece, i piloti della RC Motorsport.

Muy mala suerte para nico que no logra puntuar una vez mas.........Veremos que se puede hacer mańana pero en fin......El lider mortara se escapa un poco mas, y tremendo pińo se dio traia el aleron roto no se si por que se toco en alguna urva anterior o le tocaron y nada pudo hacer por colisionar contra las protecciones por suerte sin consecuencias para el jover germano.
