A1GP Sentul, IndonesiaIndonesia will host its second A1GP event in 2006, after the successful first A1GP Sentul, Indonesia, in February. The success of the last race may have come as a surprise to some, who see Indonesia’s lack of international sporting events as a disadvantage. This proved not to be the case, with some fantastic racing, packed grandstands and above all a great atmosphere at the circuit’s first A1GP event.

While drivers may have mixed feelings about the challenging and physically demanding circuit, spectators and viewers certainly won’t, as the track provided one of the most surprising and entertaining Feature races of the first season.

Located in the lush and tropical landscape of Bogor, and just 42 km from the vibrant city of Jakarta, the A1GP Sentul, Indonesia is a unique event in motorsport.

Circuit historySentul International Circuit is located in the region of Bogor, 42 km of Jakarta. Originally built as a circuit to host Formula One Grand Prix, the track was completed in 1994. Despite its facilities, the track has never hosted a Formula One event, and predominantly holds bike racing and Asian Formula 3 races.

The circuit is fast and wide, allowing for many different racing lines which provide overtaking manoeuvres. The heat and humidity mean that this is a tough and tiring circuit for the drivers, the 36 lap feature race is a particular challenge.

Last year’s races provided an exciting spectacle, with A1 Team France taking victory in the Sprint race after overtaking pole sitter Robbie Kerr on the first lap. The Feature race saw a surprise result, with Canada’s Sean McIntosh finishing on the top step of the podium, despite starting last on the grid, and suffering a driver through penalty.

The difficult conditions and wide circuit are bound to provide another exciting race for A1GP’s second visit.

Country informationIndonesia is the world’s largest Archipelago and is made up of 18,108 islands, of which 7,000 are inhabited. The most populated island is Java, with half of the population, followed by the islands of Sumatra. Borneo, New Guinea and Sulawesi.

Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world and the fourth most populated country overall.

The Portuguese were the first European to show interest in Indonesia, and later in seventeenth century became the most powerful group in the region while the Dutch held power through the nineteenth century.

During the Second World War, with the Netherlands under German occupation, Japan succeeded in taking control of the colony. Following the defeat of Japan in 1945, the Netherlands attempted to regain control of their previous colony, with the backing of the British, but after intense international pressure, especially from the USA and internal war in Indonesia, the Netherlands was forced to recognise Indonesia as a Federation of Autonomous States.

The 1950s and 60s saw a period of unrest in the country, due to military confrontation with neighbouring Malaysia and domestic disturbances. Army General, Suharto attempted to take control of the situation when he became President in 1967, but his controversial leadership of the country came to an end when he was forced to step down amid massive popular demonstrations and a weak economy in 1998.

Indonesia had four presidents during the period 1998 – 2005. The first free and direct presidential election was held in 2004 and was the largest one-day election in the world.

Located on the edge of tectonic plates, Indonesia suffers from some of the heighest levels of seismic and volcanic activity in the world. One of the most significant events was a massive earthquake and tsunami on 26 December 2004 which completely devastated parts of northern Sumatra, particularly the area of Aceh. A further earthquake in March 2005, destroyed most of the buildings on Nias Island, in which 100s of people were killed. Despite these challenges, Indonesia has recovered, proving itself to be a vibrant and resilient country, which hosted one of the most colourful and memorable races of the first season.

Local A1 TeamA1 Team Indonesia perfectly embodies the spirit of A1GP. A nation not typically associated with motorsport, the country has provided a talented young driver with a good racing background and an enthusiastic team of mechanics. Building on the notion that each team should be made up mostly of nationals, A1 Team Indonesia is using the experience of an established motorsport team to train national mechanics, who may not have experience in an international motor racing series. The final goal being that over time, more and more Indonesian nationals will join the team and the reliance on outside providers will diminish.

Ananda Mikola was undoubtedly the star of the show at the A1GP Sentul, Indonesia, with 46,000 spectators creating one of the most enthusiastic crowds of the first season. A1 Team Indonesia has demonstrated what a strong effect patriotic spirit and national pride can have.

Sentul Qualifying one
09/12/2006 - German Nico Hülkenberg has reinforced his newly-won reputation as the master of the flying lap as he set the fastest time in the first of the four Qualifying sessions at Sentul, Indonesia. The 19-year-old set a time of 1:16.668, just six hundredths of a second quicker than New Zealand’s Jonny Reid. Early weekend pace setters Great Britain and France were third and fourth quickest; the USA’s Phil Giebler again right up there in fifth.

Qualifying two
09/12/2006 -
The second of the four segments was briefly interrupted by a red flag after A1GP Team Ireland debutee Richard Lyons spun at Turn Three and went into the tyre wall. The session was restarted when Lyons was pushed free. Alex Yoong of Malaysia also spun at the same corner when the session got underway again. Great Britain rose to the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:16.762 after Germany failed to match its earlier scintillating pace.

Qualifying three
09/12/2006 - Germany retook pole position from Great Britain in the penultimate Qualifying segment. Hülkenberg’s lap of 1:16.859 was not the quickest of the session however, as the USA posted a time of 1:16.703. New Zealand retained third from Giebler and Mexico’s Salvador Duran with one segment remaining.

Qualifying four
09/12/2006 - New Zealand’s Jonny Reid snatched pole position with a last gasp flying lap of 1:16.510. Hülkenberg had looked good to keep the top spot, however Reid’s lap in the last two minutes of Qualifying was enough to secure the Kiwi driver his second A1GP pole of the season. Great Britain snatched second from the Germans in the final minute to relegate Hülkenberg to third.

Full report to follow…

NEW ZEALAND’S LAST GASP LAP SECURES SENTUL POLE

09/12/2006
Sentul
A1 Team New Zealand’s Jonny Reid has snatched pole position for the Gudang Garam A1GP Sentul, Indonesia Sprint race with a last-gasp flying lap in the dying minutes of Qualifying. Great Britain’s Robbie Kerr also moved up in the last minute to secure second position from Germany’s Nico Hülkenberg for Sunday’s 15-lap race.

Reid performed strongly throughout the four segments, setting top five times in all sessions, but it was his last lap of the day that grabbed pole, the New Zealander’s second of the year.

Great Britain’s Kerr put in a consistent performance over the four segments. The young Briton topped the times after the second session, however could only post the fifth quickest in the third until a massive push in the final minute moved him into second from young rising star Nico Hülkenberg.

After recording the fastest time in session one, 0.064secs quicker than Reid, Hülkenberg looked set to score yet another pole position, however he failed to match the pace in the remaining three 15 minute portions and dropped down to third overall. Hülkenberg confessed he had made minor set-up adjustments between sessions, which caused the balance to drop off slightly, but hopes for more tomorrow.

After setting the fastest time in the morning’s earlier practice session, Mexican Salvador Duran steadily improved his lap times in Qualifying to start the race from fourth position. Duran’s combined times were enough to win him the position against a resurgent Phil Giebler of the USA, who posted the fastest time in the third session and Australia. Defending champions France will start the race in seventh behind Australia.

A1 Team Ireland’s new racer, Richard Lyons, had an eventful first A1GP Qualifying when he ran wide into a tyre wall at Turn Three during the second session and caused a red flag period. After marshals pushed him free, he returned to the pits to repair the car’s broken nosecone and continued in the remaining sessions to start tomorrow’s 15-lap Sprint race from 18th on the grid. Home nation Indonesia will start from 17th.

The Sprint race is due to start tomorrow morning at 11.00 local time, with the result determining the grid for the afternoon’s 50-lap Feature race.

Sentul: Team Germany Saturday report

Racing series A1gpDate 2006-12-09
A1 Team Germany again on second row of the grid
For the third time in the 2006/2007 season, Willi Weber's A1 Team Germany will be starting from the second row on the grid. In the qualifying practice for the fifth round on the circuit of Sentul, Indonesia the team's driver for this race, Nicolas Hulkenberg, set the third-best time, thus repeating the previous showing in Malaysia. In the season opener at Zandvoort the German team had started from the second row as well, and from the first in the subsequent round at Brno.
In the first of the qualifying's four segments Nico Hulkenberg set the best time at 1m16.668s. In the second outing, following a red-flag interruption of the session, he was the first driver to go out again and finished in tenth place after being clocked at 1m17.730s. In the third part of the qualifying the German needed 1m16.859s to complete his lap around the circuit, which equated to the second-best time. At this point, the aggregate of the two best times put him at the top of the field. In the final fourth trial he managed the fourth-best time at 1m16.817s. This meant that he was in third place of the aggregate of the best lap times, having to admit defeat to New Zealand and Great Britain. Following his eighth and ninth places in the free practice sessions, Hulkenberg's third-best time in the qualifying represented his best result of the weekend so far.
Nicolas Hulkenberg:
"Third place is okay, because that means I've got extremely good chances for the two races on Sunday. On new tyres the first trial went very well. In the second attempt we used the same tyres and therefore were a bit slower. For the third outing, which I again started on new tyres, we changed the set-up a little, but unfortunately that was a mistake. So we chose the original set-up for the fourth run and used a new set of tyres again. Unfortunately, I made a driving mistake, which is why I merely set the fourth-best time in this segment."
Broadcast times on Premiere: Race Sentul Sunday, 10 December, 8:10 a.m.
