Hülkenberg best-placed driver from the Formula 3 Euro Series 09.08.2008 - Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix, 1:34.111 min) ended up third in the faster second free practice session for the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 and thus was the best-placed driver from the ranks of the Formula 3 Euro Series. The defending Masters-winner was followed by Jean-Karl Vernay (Signature-Plus, 1:34.126 min), Franck Mailleux (Signature-Plus, 1:34.379 min), James Jakes (ART Grand Prix, 1:34.380 min), Tom Dillmann (Jo Zeller Racing, 1:34.410 min) and Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport, 1:34.434 min). In the slower first free practice session, the Mücke driver topped the time sheet. The two free practice sessions for the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 which took place at Zolder on Friday were dominated by the rain. Because of the heavy rain, the first session had to be postponed by half an hour. In the second session, there was a downpour with 15 minutes remaining. In these conditions, hardly any driver went out on the track again and any time improvements were impossible. Thus, former Euro Series driver Esteban Guerrieri (Ultimate Motorsport, 1:33.873 min) retained his first place until the end of the session and there was no way to beat second-placed Atte Mustonen (Räikkönen Robertson Racing, 1:34.028 min) either. However, Nico Hülkenberg wasn’t too disappointed with his third place: “I am feeling well in the car and at the track, which is already quite important. I like driving at Zolder in general and the track is also fun to drive in the rain. However, the weather was too changeable to do some serious testing.” For Franck Mailleux, who ended up fifth, practice wasn’t very useful. “Conditions were changing all the time, so that it was impossible to try anything. Therefore, finding a good set-up was impossible.” The Frenchman once again went out onto the track when it was raining heavily already. “When it is raining so heavily and the track is so wet, you can have neither a qualifying nor a race. That would be far too dangerous.” James Jakes, who ranked one place bahind Mailleux, was confident. “We were all quick here, my team ART Grand Prix is well prepared. That is all one can say after this strange session.” Even Jules Bianchi, who was the slowest ART Grand Prix driver in 13th place, was optimistic for qualifying. “I was among the top positions all the time and I was in contention for first place. However, I was in the pits at the wrong time and when I got out again, it just started raining. In any case, the speed is there.”

Re: Nico Hülkenberg
![]() Last-gasp Masters pole for Hulkenberg By Steven English Saturday, August 9th 2008, 13:29 GMT Nico Hulkenberg clinched pole position for this weekend's Masters of Formula 3 at Zolder with a sensational late effort in this afternoon's final qualifying session. The German, who is bidding to become the first driver ever to win back-to-back Masters titles, produced an incredible lap in the dying seconds of the session to pinch the pole from his ART Grand Prix teammate Jules Bianchi. Bianchi was more than half a second clear of the field for half the top 20 shootout after staying out on his first set of tyres for three laps longer than his rivals. Several attempts to topple Bianchi with new tyres failed, until Henkie Waldschmidt's stranded SG Formula car forced the session to be red flagged. Once it was recovered, there was only time for two flying laps each. Several drivers took it turns to catapult themselves into the top six, but none could match Bianchi's earlier effort. Hulkenberg's first effort was two tenths shy and only good enough for third, but he improved by half a second on his final lap to snatch the pole from Bianchi by more than quarter of a second. "It was quite tough," said Hulkenberg. "We are at the top of the pit lane so there were a lot of cars in front of me after the red flag. I knew that last lap would have to be perfect, but I thought there would be too much traffic. There was a little, but I also got a tow which helped a bit. "Of course I want to win every race, but because this isn't part of a championship I am quite relaxed about it. We will either win or we won't, lets just see what happens tomorrow." Renger van der Zande got within a tenth of Bianchi with his last effort and earned third place on the grid, while Koudai Tsukakoshi completed the second row, heading a train of 14 cars covered by less than half a second. Stefano Coletti finished up fifth, ahead of Max Chilton, who was best of the British championship drivers in sixth. Jon Lancaster, Mika Maki, Brendon Hartley, and Daniel Campos-Hull completed the top ten. Tom Dillman set the best time of the Group B session to earn 21st place on the grid. He was embroiled in a three way battle with Atte Mustonen and Sam Bird for much of the half hour, but Dillman secured the top spot from Bird as the times dipped into the high 1:24s at the end. Yann Clairay pipped Mustonen for third (23rd) at the end, and James Jakes took fifth (25th) with his final lap of the session. Group A Pos Driver Team Car Time Gap 1. Masters - Zolder - Qualifying Nico Hulkenberg grabs pole Defending titlist Hülkenberg on pole for Masters at Zolder At the 4.011 kilometres long circuit of Zolder in Belgium, Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix, 1:24.280 min) claimed pole position for the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3. The German already succeeded in winning Europe’s most important Formula 3 race last year and his goal is now to defend his title. Second place on the grid went to Frenchman Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 1:24.550 min) from Dutchman Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam, 1:24.640 min), Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport, 1:24.813 min) from Japan and Stefano Coletti (Prema Powerteam, 1:24.869 min). Thus, the top five places were all locked out by drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series. In the top twelve, there are even ten drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series. With a few minutes remaining, qualifying was briefly interrupted after Spaniard Dani Clos (Prema Powerteam, 1:26.157 min) had come off the track. After the re-start, the drivers only had two laps left to improve their lap times. Nico Hülkenberg, the test driver of the Williams Formula 1 team, only did so as the chequered flag was being waved. For Nico Hülkenberg’s team ART Grand Prix, it is already the fifth fastest qualifying time in a row at the Masters of Formula 3. In the end, it was a matter of nerves.” Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix): “I am very happy, being second fastest in qualifying on my very first weekend of racing here at Zolder. I try to learn something in every race. At the moment, I seem to be doing well and therefore, it is going quite well for me.” Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam): “I am very happy with third place om the grid at the Masters of Formula 3. There are only two cars ahead of me and I want to beat them tomorrow, too. I am feeling really well.“

Rookie Jules Bianchi wins Masters of Formula 3 10.08.2008 - Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix) is the winner of Europe’s most important Formula 3 race. After 28 laps, defending titlist Nico Hülkenberg took the chequered flag in second place. The podium was completed by Jon Lancaster (ART Grand Prix), who came home third in the RTL GP Masters of Formula 3 at the 4.011 kilometres long circuit of Zolder. Thus, the podium was locked out by drivers from the Formula 3 Euro Series. There were seven drivers from the strongest junior race series in the top ten. The 18th edition of the Masters of Formula 3 was started at a wet track, although rain had stopped. Jules Bianchi had the best start, getting in front of Nico Hülkenberg right away. On the first few metres, there was a collision between Renger van der Zande (Prema Powerteam) and Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport), both having started from the second row. In the process, van der Zande hit the right rear wheel of Hülkenberg’s car, but the German was able to continue without any problems. In spite of the difficult conditions, Bianchi and Hülkenberg made no mistakes and dominated the race that saw many drivers spin off the track. Since the Formula 3 Euro Series was founded in 2003, the prestigious Masters of Formula 3 race was won by a driver from the Euro Series every year. For the ART Grand Prix team, Bianchi’s victory was the fifth Masters win in a row. Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix): “I had a very good start and tried to pull a gap on Nico Hülkenberg. Especially in the beginning, there were many yellow flags and Nico was very quick. Therefore, I couldn’t pull away. Towards the end of the race, my tyres weren’t in the best condition anymore and I concentrated on driving victory home.” Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix): “My start wasn’t great as my tyres didn’t get any grip on the white line. On the first laps of the race, I was still confident. However, there were many yellow flags, which made it impossible to attack. The longer it took, the more difficult it became to put Jules under pressure, as my tyres lost grip.” Jon Lancaster (ART Grand Prix): “My start was nearly perfect. I could move up from seventh on the grid into third right away. All in all, I am happy with the weekend and I am happy that my team ART has a clean sweep of the podium.”
