Battle for the championship lead getting close and closer

27.08.2008 - When the Formula 3 Euro Series is going to contest its two British rounds on Brands Hatch’s 1.929-kilometre Indy Circuit, this weekend, three drivers will entertain the crowds with their thrilling battle for the championship lead. Current leader Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus), Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix) and Mika Mäki (Mücke Motorsport) are split by just four points.

And even British Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton doesn’t want to miss this battle. The Formula 1 World Championship leader and 2005 Formula 3 Euro Series Champion will come to Brands Hatch to execute some demonstration laps at the wheel of his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-23.

In the recent weeks, Volkswagen ace Mortara got under immense pressure of his chasers but so far, he succeeded in defending his championship lead, nevertheless. Nonetheless, Hülkenberg believes in his chance of leaving Great Britain as new leader. After all, he has reduced the lead of Mortara to just one point. On the other hand, he also has to keep an eye on Finland’s Mika Mäki who follows another three points behind.

The best British driver on the grid of the planet’s most competitive young-gun series currently is Jon Lancaster (ART Grand Prix). With 12 rounds contested, he holds eighth position in the championship. Five weeks ago, at the Nürburgring, the 19-year old celebrated his maiden Formula 3 win. Four positions behind the rookie follows his Art Grand Prix team-mate James Jakes. In front of his home crowd, the latter would love to add another win to the one he secured in Pau.

Jon Lancaster (ART Grand Prix): “Back in 2006, I contested one of my first car races and the Indy Circuit of Brands Hatch. Therefore I have special memories of this racetrack. Unfortunately, overtaking is virtually impossible, there. Therefore, a good qualifying performance is particularly important. My goal for my home race? To secure pole position in qualifying and win the Saturday race. Last year, in the Formula Renault Eurocup, I also clinched my maiden pole in the British event, at Donington. I hope this will prove to be a good omen.”

Hülkenberg travels to the UK as championship leader

29.08.2008 - Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix), test driver for the Williams Formula 1 team, is going to contest this weekend’s Formula 3 Euro Series rounds held at Brands Hatch’s short Indy Circuit as new championship leader. While last year’s winner - previous leader Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) is determined to strike back on the 1.929-kilometre track located in Kent County.

Therefore, thrilling races are guaranteed and even British Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton doesn’t want to miss this battle. The current Formula 1 World Championship leader and 2005 Formula 3 Euro Series Champion will come to Brands Hatch to execute some demonstration laps at the wheel of his Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-23.

On the Thursday prior to the race weekend, the appeal court judges opted for allowing the appeal filed by Team ART Grand Prix against their driver’s Zandvoort disqualification for having failed to meet the minimum-weight regulations. With the ten points for his win in the Dutch Saturday round, Hülkenberg has got nine points more on his tally than Mortara and consequently is the new championship leader.

Brands Hatch, libere: Prema leader con Renger Van der Zande

Buon inizio per il team Prema a Brands Hatch, tracciato Indy, nell'unico turno di prove libere in programma per la F.3 Euro Series. Renger Van der Zande ha infatti ottenuto il primo tempo in 41"956 mentre al secondo posto si è piazzato Kodai Tsukakoshi, reduce dalla 1000 KM di Suzuka del campionato GT giapponese. Undicesimo tempo per Edoardo Mortara. Sessione più difficile per gli altri due piloti Prema, Dani Clos (15°) e Stefano Coletti (24°). La RC Motorsport ha Cheng Cong Fu 21° mentre Martin Plowman e Jens Klingmann chiudono la classifica. Assenti la quarta vettura RC, la terza monoposto SG e il team Zeller.

Brands Hatch, qualifica: Jules Bianchi conquista la prima pole

La vittoria nel Masters di Zolder ha galvanizzato Jules Bianchi. Il francese del team ART ha conquistato infatti la sua prima pole nella F.3 Euro Series. Sul circuito di Brands Hatch, i piloti per la qualifica sono stati divisi tra pari e dispari. Bianchi è sceso in pista nel primo gruppo ed è stato costantemente il più veloce abbassando più volte il proprio limite fino a raggiungere il tempo finale di 41"668 davanti a Kodai Tsukakoshi e James Jakes.

Nel Gruppo B, Nico Hulkenberg ha tentato in tutte le maniere di strappare la pole al compagno di team, ma invano. Il tedesco, nuovo leader del campionato dopo aver ricevuto i punti della vittoria in gara 1 a Zandvoort dove era stato squalificato perché la sua vettura era risultata sottopeso (estintore svuotato per cause estranee), è stato il più rapido dei piloti con numero dispari con 41"780, ma non è bastato per guadagnare la pole. Hulkenberg ha preceduto un eccellente Sam Bird che partirà dalla seconda fila per la seconda volta in questa stagione.

Quarta fila per Edoardo Mortara (quarto nel gruppo dispari), primo tra i motori Volkswagen. Ha deluso le aspettative Renger Van der Zande del team Prema, primo nel turno libero della mattina. L'olandese ha scatterà dalla quinta fila. Peggio hanno fatto Dani Clos (settima fila) e Stefano Coletti (nona fila). In undicesima, dodicesima e tredicesima fila i piloti RC Motorsport con Cong Fu Cheng più rapido di Jens Klingmann e Martin Plowman. Un errore è costato caro a Mika Maki, soltanto nono mentre Niall Breen ha picchiato duro.

Masters-winner Jules Bianchi claims maiden pole position

29.08.2008 - Frenchman Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix, 0:41.668 min) claimed pole position for the 13th season round. At the only 1.929 kilometres long Indy version of the Brands Hatch circuit with its long heritage, he drove the fastest lap time in qualifying. Lining up alongside him on the front row of the grid for tomorrow’s race will be Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix, 0:41.780 min). The second grid row will be occupied by the duo Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport, 0:41.782 min) and Sam Bird (Manor Motorsport, 0:41.795 min).

Because of the short track, the 26 drivers were split up into two groups with 25 minutes qualifying time each. In the first group, meant for drivers with even starting numbers, Jules Bianchi came out on top. The Frenchman was followed by Koudai Tsukakoshi and James Jakes (ART Grand Prix, 0:41.899 min). The fastest time in the group for drivers with odd starting numbers was set by Nico Hülkenberg from Sam Bird and Christian Vietoris (Mücke Motorsport, 0:41.809 min). As Bianchi set the outright fastest time, he will be allowed to start from pole position while the drivers from his group will be lining up right behind him.

Jules Bianchi (ART Grand Prix): “After free practice, I worked on my driving style together with my engineer and I could benefit from that in qualifying. Now, I still have to become quicker in fast corners, where my team-mate Nico Hülkenberg is still better. I am happy with my maiden pole position in the Formula 3 Euro Series. Tomorrow, I want to win my first race in the Formula 3 Euro Series, too.“

Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix): “I lost two tenths of a second in the second sector only, which I just can’t understand. I was really quick in the first sector and in the third one, it went pretty well, too. Only the central part didn’t go as planned, no matter what I tried. Had I not lost so much time there, I would now be on pole position.“

Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport): “I am happy with my third place on the grid. With my first set of tyres, I still had a lot of oversteer. With the second set, I got a really good lap, but then the car started to oversteer again.”

Nico Hülkenberg celebrates fifth season win

30.08.2008 - At the Indy circuit of Brands Hatch, only 1.929 kilometres short, Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix) celebrated his fifth victory of the season in the Formula 3 Euro Series. In an action-packed race, the test driver of the Williams Formula 1 team clearly beat Japanese Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport), who finished second for the third time this year already. Frenchman Yann Clairay (SG Formula) completed the podium. His victory allowed Hülkenberg to extend his points lead to 14 points. After 13 rounds, Italian Edoardo Mortara (Signature-Plus) is second. At Brands Hatch, he took the chequered flag in fourth place, just behind Clairay.

After the start, Jules Bianchi took the lead, which he kept until the 23rd lap. Then, he had to come into the pit lane for a drive through penalty. The clerk of the course found that he had set a fastest sector time while yellow flags were out. Just like Bianchi, another seven drivers were penalised for the same infringement. After his penalty, Masters winner Bianchi dropped down to seventh and eventually retired with six laps to go following a collision with James Jakes (ART Grand Prix) while battling for fifth.

Nico Hülkenberg (ART Grand Prix): “Winning is always great and therefore I am very happy with this result. Initially, Jules Bianchi was too fast for me, I couldn’t follow him. Later on, I benefited from his drive-through penalty and took over first place. Once in front, I could drive victory home in a controlled way.“

Koudai Tsukakoshi (Manor Motorsport): “Second place is a good result, even though Hülkenberg finished ahead of me again. At the start, I tried to get past him and we tangled slightly. Then I tried to overtake him on the outside, but unfortunately, this didn’t work. With a good start, a podium finish should be possible tomorrow.“

Yann Clairay (SG Formula): “I had a very good start and won two places right away. After that, I also benefited as Sam Bird was involved in a start crash. Towards the end of the race, my car was oversteering more and more and Mortara put me under pressure, but I managed to stay ahead of him.”
