Michelin to supply A1GP

Monday, July 21, 2008

Michelin is to become the exclusive tyre partner to A1GP World Cup of Motorsport starting with the 2008/09 season. The French company which has a vast motorsport heritage has signed a three year deal to provide tyres for the new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car.
Michelin tyre technicians have been working hard with the A1GP technical personnel to provide the best possible rubber for the series. Since the Powered by Ferrari car had its first run in Fiorano in late May it has been using the company’s tyres and has clocked up over 4,000 kilometres on tracks in Italy and Spain.
Feedback from testing, during which A1GP has been able to tap into the vast experience of Andrea Bertolini, Patrick Friesacher and Marc Gene, has been very positive. All drivers commented on the tyres’ consistency and that they were able to feel the difference between the various sets.
Michelin’s involvement in motor racing has always been the result of a careful mixture of passion and reason for numerous decades. A commitment always combined with full responsibility for the design, manufacture and use of products during a competition, as well as the spirit of co-operation with their partners. The tyres’ technological development therefore results from close co-operation between A1GP and Michelin engineers.
The tyre design stems from Formula One technologies seeking to offer both optimal performance and safety to the driver. Full rubber serration tests were performed on various tracks including Fiorano, Imola, Jerez and Mugello resulting in the best possible compromise between grip, endurance and wear.
Michelin will be present in the paddock to guarantee high-quality service throughout the season. The use of this high-technology product by all A1GP teams shall be supervised under the watchful and expert eye of a skilled Michelin technician.
“We are very pleased to be working with Michelin for the next three seasons," said A1GP general manager, technical and operations, John Wickham. "Michelin has a vast amount of experience in motorsport and will enhance the competitive nature of our series. We commenced the test programme at the beginning of June and have now specified the most suitable tyre compound and construction for our new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car.
"We have run 29 sets of slick tyres and three sets of wets so far. There are small differences between the spec of the slicks, about 50% are ‘control’ spec so 15 or so ‘test’ sets.”
Michelin Group Motorsport Director, Frédéric Henry-Biabaud: “Michelin is extremely honoured to be associated with the fast-growing A1GP series and is looking forward to playing a part in the championship's expansion.
“The championship organiser has decided to produce a new Powered by Ferrari single-seater and Michelin was active in this car's development from the outset. This close collaboration underpins Michelin's image as a truly dependable technical partner.
“This association with such prestigious partners represents a genuine challenge and it is Michelin's experience of advanced technology single-seater racing tyres that has enabled it to rise so successfully to the occasion.”

Isidre Esteve vuelve a competir 21 07 2008

New brand displayed

Tuesday, July 22, 2008

The new A1GP brand was given its first public showing today at the launch event for A1GP Mugello, Italy.
The design of the new A1GP World Cup of Motorsport logo represents the values and distinctiveness of the existing logo, now incorporating the iconic Ferrari brand as the series moves into a new era, with the new A1GP Powered by Ferrari cars.
The solution is a dynamic combination of the two identities, capturing both the excitement and momentum of A1GP and the heritage and reputation of Ferrari.
The simple, powerful new logo is a clear and uncompromising combination of the two brands. The new logo is memorable and easy to apply across a growing range of media as the series evolves and grows.
“Partnering with a world-class organisation like Ferrari officially cements A1GP’s position on the International motorsport calendar,” said Tony Teixeira, A1GP Chairman.
“Ferrari adds significant value to our brand and in our opinion there is no better partner to progress the series. This is the first time Ferrari has partnered with another series and we are extremely proud for them to be working with A1GP as the series moves forward into its fourth season.”

The extensive testing programme has produced a car to be proud of, and the distinctive notes of the Ferrari engine that will be propelling all the cars on the A1GP grids round the world could today be heard powering around the Ferrari-owned circuit.
“It is a pleasure to cooperate with A1GP World Cup of Motorsport,” said Mario Almondo, Operations Director, Gestione Sportiva, attending on behalf of engine supplier Ferrari.
“The project and the development of the chassis-engine package has been done in a record-time frame. The eight-cylinder engine, which will be the basis of the new family of Ferrari road cars engines, has shown excellent performance and drivability. It is also important that the first race weekend of the 2008/09 season will take place at the Mugello circuit, a top-class venue in motorsport in terms of safety and facilities, as shown during the last Italian Grand Prix of MotoGP.”
Italian Andrea Bertolini has been one of the drivers tasked with putting the new car through its paces during the development stages and has completed nearly 3000-kilometres of testing so far. Although doing a job for all the teams he will be taking a particular interest in the progress of his home nation, A1 Team Italy, this coming season.
“I am happy to contribute to the development of this car,” Bertolini said. “I have done a few days of testing and I have to say I am quite happy with the results. The car is growing up very quickly and is nice to drive it. The engine also has good drivability and the level of performance is very high. This package will help make the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport ever more interesting.”

A1 Team Italy also proudly displayed its new car for the 2008/09 season at the event.
“At present we are preparing the Italian driver team,” said A1 Team Italy seatholder Piercarlo Ghinzani.
“Our goal is to run a team of four drivers: two rookies and two official drivers. The targets for this season is to guide A1 Team Italy to victory.

A1GP-Team verhandelt mit Rossi

25. Juli 2008 - 14:30 Uhr

Assen gets a taste of new A1GP car

Monday, August 04, 2008

The A1GP Powered by Ferrari car made its debut in the Netherlands this weekend giving the packed grandstands at the Rizla Racing Day in Assen a taste of what the series has in store for season four.

Renger van der Zande was behind the wheel to give the spectators and members of the press the opportunity to hear the distinctive notes of the Ferrari engine that will be propelling all the cars on the A1GP grids as it powered around the Dutch circuit. The A1 Team Netherlands car was also on display in the paddock.

It was a great experience for Renger to be the first Dutch driver to drive the new A1GP car: “It was fantastic. There is so much interest as a lot of people want to know everything about the car, and want to see it and touch it. Yet I have been the one that has been allowed to drive a few laps in it here today. The car feels really good, there is a lot of grip and also quite a bit of torque. There is already a lot of power in the low revs, then it just keeps going and does not top out at the end of the straight. The car balance was ok. I only drove for a short time, but everything felt ok. It is a high-tech car, with all modern developments like the clutch on the steering wheel. It’s very good.”

In two weeks time the A1GP Powered by Ferrari car heads to Rotterdam.

Wind tunnel testing for new car

Friday, August 01, 2008

Wind tunnel testing has been a key element in the development of the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport Powered by Ferrari car for season four. The car that had its first public running at the Mugello circuit was the product of many hours spent by the A1GP technical team in wind tunnels at the University of Southampton’s School of Engineering Sciences.

“To ensure we continue the A1GP tradition of strong racing, coupled with lots of overtaking, the effort of the design team has been to provide a chassis that has a good level of down force, but without the normal penalties,” John Travis, A1GP Technical Director said. “This will make for much closer racing particularly in the corners as cars will be able to run together. We have spent in excess of 300 hours in the wind tunnel and have tried hundreds of different aerodynamic variations to ensure the close, exciting racing the series is famous for not only continues but gets better.”

The University of Southampton’s School of Engineering Sciences has a variety of wind tunnels which have been used extensively by Formula One, Indy Racing League and CART racing teams over the years. A 40 per cent scale model of the A1GP Powered by Ferrari car was tested at the facility and performed just as expected giving the development team a good set of aerodynamic data to work with as they continue the on track testing programme in Europe.

The testing has been continuing in France with Andrea Bertolini in the car for three days at Paul Ricard near Marseille with 400-kilometres covered on one day alone. Testing then moved to Magny-Cours, with Patrick Friesacher at the wheel last week increasing the total distance covered by the new A1GP car to 5,667 kilometres.

The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport 2008-09 season will officially get underway later this year with A1GP Mugello, Italy, 19 – 21 September 2008.

Rule changes for the new season

Monday, August 11, 2008

The pressure will be even greater for the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport national teams when they go to Mugello, Italy for the start of the 2008/09 season in September.

An extra mandatory pit stop is among the changes to the series’ Sporting Regulations planned to make the racing even more exciting, with the extra stop having to be taken in the A1GP Sprint Race between laps four and eight. It is the first time in A1GP history that the Sprint race will contain a pit stop.

“We never stop looking for ways of improving the action on the track," said Tony Teixeira, A1GP chairman.

"The two pit stops in the Feature Race have proved to be the really high pressure points of the events. We felt an additional one would not only add another variable into the Sprint Race mix, but also give the crews another opportunity to display their team work.

"When we sat down to discuss ways of improving the series from every viewpoint this was a popular addition. However, we have also made other changes that will give the teams greater flexibility in certain areas."

The unique qualifying format has also proved very popular with the spectators and to increase the drama and tension each of the four sessions have now been reduced from 15 to ten minutes with the same five minute break between each. Here the added pressure is on the drivers, as the Sprint Race grid is determined from each driver’s best time taken from sessions one and two and the Feature Race grid from sessions three and four.

Nations can and do use the Friday to try out young or less experienced drivers in the two Rookie and Developing Nation Sessions. This popular addition will continue, but now there will be no age limit and the gap between the two 30 minute sessions has increased from five to 20 minutes.

The duration of the Sprint Race, with its rolling start, has also been increased from 19 to 24 minutes plus one lap, while the Feature Race, from a standing start, remains at 69 minutes plus one lap.

However, now the points’ allocation for the shorter race has also been reduced with them only going to the top eight on the scale of 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. The Feature Race remains the same with the top ten receiving points on the scale of 15, 12, 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1.

Testing update: The A1GP World Cup of Motorsport test at Silverstone on the 19th and 20th August is now just for the series test cars on the track.

All teams will be running at the two day test at Donington Park on the 9th and 11th September.
This decision will ensure the teams will have exactly the same data and so be able to compare their track progress in relation to the other teams.

Cars continue build process

Thursday, August 14, 2008

Anticipation is building ahead of the 2008/09 A1GP World Cup of Motorsport season, with some teams now nearing completion of the construction of their A1GP Powered by Ferrari cars.
These pictures, exclusive to A1GP.com, show A1 Teams Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand among others, building and preparing their cars for the new season, which begins next month.
The original test car has clocked up nearly a season’s worth of mileage during the off-season, with the second test car due to join it in a three-day test at Silverstone next week.
A1GP is not only preparing the cars but also the A1 Teams for the new season. Next week training seminars will be held at the series Silverstone base with mechanics and engineers from every team being given training in all aspects of the car; including the gearbox, electronics, data logging and parts maintenance, all of which have specific technical knowledge requirements.
The cars will take to the track for the first time in official testing in Donington on September 9 -11, before leaving for Mugello for two days of further official testing. This precedes the opening round of the season at the Italian circuit on September 21.

New car passes crash test

Monday, August 18, 2008

A1GP World Cup of Motorsport has always prided itself in the fact that its cars are some of the safest on the world’s race tracks. Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the new A1GP Powered by Ferrari car has undergone and passed some of the most stringent crash tests possible.

The car firstly underwent FIA chassis squeeze tests, as opposed to a sudden impact test, with pressure applied to key parts of the car to ensure the necessary strength. Following this there have been roll-hoop load tests, front and rear impact and side impact tests.

The frontal impact test involves a head-on collision into a thick steel plate set in concrete. In such an impact, the nosecone in front of the pedals is allowed a small amount of deformation with no damage beyond the nosecone acceptable and with the deceleration of the car also measured to ensure the chassis, and therefore driver, would not be subjected to excessive g-force on impact.
Rear impact tests involve weights, which is the equivalent to a fully-fuelled A1GP car being hit into the back to test there would be no damage to the cockpit. This is similar to the way side impact tests are carried out to check that cars can withstand pre-specified impacts and still leave the internal cockpit undamaged. Finally, a steering column impact test was also undertaken.

The tests were all carried out under the watchful eye of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) and A1GP technical director, John Travis at the TRL, the UK's Transport Research Laboratory, in Berkshire.
“We did a lot of pre-tests on all the components in isolation and FEA (Finite Element Analysis) studies on the structural design of the chassis, before moving on to the physical tests," said Travis.

"The car has now completed 5800-kilometres without problems so we’re very happy with the progress. We have a small number of engine software issues to finalise but tyre testing is now complete and Michelin are ready and looking forward to a competitive season ahead.”

Dr Paul Trafford, A1GP's medical delegate, was delighted with the outcome, and A1GP's continued drive to make the series as safe as possible.

He explained: "The FIA has stringent crash testing requirements which are constantly being updated to ensure the “safety cell” concept is advanced and improved each year as technology develops.

"The tub acts as a “safety cell” around the driver to absorb energy in the event of an impact, prevent intrusion and injury and protect the head and other vital areas. The idea is that if a car is rolling or spinning it is losing the energy that is transferred to the driver when the car impacts another object. Deformable and crushable areas of the car such as the nosecone actually help reduce this energy further before it is experienced by the driver.

“I am delighted that A1GP has taken the safety of its drivers so seriously and has committed to ensuring the cars stay at the forefront of safety technology and are willing to listen to advice from medical experts and other industry experts in order to achieve this.”
